Can Microcement Fix Uneven Floors? And Other Questions From November
We have quite a following on social media (find us on Instagram) and we love when the community starts a conversation about microcement — this month we receive plenty of questions from builders, tilers, designers and homeowners trying to understand what it can and can’t do.
One of the most common questions? “Can microcement fix uneven floors?” and “Is it self-levelling”. Let’s break that down properly — along with a few other things that potential clients might be wondering.
Concrete resurfacing with X-Bond.
Can Microcement Fix Uneven Floors?
Short answer: No. Microcement, including our product X-Bond, needs a level and smooth base for adhesion. It’s not a structural levelling product. As it’s hand-applied in multiple ultra-thin layers (X-Bond is 1/8”), it follows the integrity of the existing substrate.
Microcement can fix:
minor height variations
texture differences — an applicator can grind or sand an uneven substrate (to an extent)
hairline imperfections with the help of our crack-bridging membrane
Microcement cannot fix:
major height differences
large slopes, dips or humps
structural defects
movement or instability in the substrate
For these issues, you’ll need a self-levelling compound, a screed, or other measures as recommended by a surfacing specialist. This is because unevenness, cracking, and other imperfections in a substrate can show through the thin microcement layer.
Think of microcement as a finishing system, not a miracle repair product.
Does Microcement Crack?
The answer to this question depends on the product formula, the substrate, and the installation.
X-Bond Microcement is highly flexible. SEMCO engineers devised a formula that balances this flexibility with inherent strength, so that it accommodates natural building settlement without cracking, yet has all the hardy durability needed of high-traffic flooring, functional joinery, and other surfaces.
When installed correctly on a stable base, our microcement stays crack-free. But:
if the substrate is unstable or moves significantly, cracks can telegraph through
if the surface is not prepared correctly, adhesion issues can cause tension
if the installation is rushed, joints and stress points can fail
A professional installer will assess substrate movement, reinforce weak areas and use mesh or other measures to stabilise if needed. For DIY application, these guidelines must be followed accurately.

Can Microcement Be Used in Bathrooms?
Yes! X-Bond Microcement is one of the best materials for wet areas. It’s seamless (no grout lines), waterproof and mold-resistant when sealed correctly. This makes it suitable for walls, floors, vanities and showers.

How Durable Is Microcement?
Microcement is tough — tougher than most people expect. It’s resistant to:
impact
scratching
daily wear
stains (with proper sealing)
heat and moisture
In high-traffic commercial areas especially, microcement regularly outperforms tiles, vinyl and acrylic systems.
The key factors impacting durability are the quality of the product, the quality of the installation, the type of sealant used and maintenance practices. Remember, it’s low-maintenance but not no maintenance!
How Long Does Microcement Last?
With the right prep and sealing, microcement can last 10–25+ years. Maintaining it is simple:
avoid harsh chemicals
reseal every few years
use felt pads under heavy furniture
clean with pH-neutral products
Can You Put Microcement Over Tiles?
Yes. This is one of microcement’s biggest advantages. It can be applied over tiles, as well as other surfaces like:
concrete
screed
plasterboard
existing render
Tiles must be firmly adhered, cleaned, degreased and primed correctly — sometimes filled and meshed depending on grout joints.
Being able to remodel old materials without removal saves time, money and a whole lot of demolition mess during renovations.

Is Microcement Slippery?
No, microcement is not slippery as it’s an inherently textured material. With the X-Bond range, you can adjust the finish to achieve a desired texture finish — from really smooth to extra tactile. We also have additives to achieve higher slip ratings for various commercial and residential applications.

So there you have it. Microcement is incredibly versatile, but like any product it has limits. In most instances, substrate prep and expert installation are the key to achieving the perfect finish for your desired application.
