Things You Didn’t Know About X-Bond
If you’ve seen photos of X-Bond Microcement, you’ll know it’s a wonderfully textural, seamless surface that adds visual depth and character to any space. But there's a lot more to this finish than meets the eye. Let’s look beyond its surface-level beauty to unpack why the formula, history, and the processes behind the finish are so important.
1. It’s Been Tried, Tested and Loved for Over 30 Years
While it might feel like microcement is having a ‘moment’ right now, X-Bond has actually been around for three decades. In 1991, it was developed by our founder Sam Sem and a team of surface engineers as an innovative alternative for remodeling existing materials without demolition. Until then, microcement wasn’t really specified in architectural design projects. SEMCO Surfaces is totally unique in that we’re an industry leader with 30 years of experience in refining our product… and 30 years of case studies to prove the long-term results achieved with X-Bond.
2. X-Bond Isn’t Just for Floors
Once it did reach mainstream popularity, microcement was most commonly specified on floors and walls, considered a good substitute for concrete or plaster. While these are still among its most popular applications, the possibilities with X-Bond don’t stop there. Ceilings, joinery, showers, pools, facades, cabinetry, countertops… its flexibility opens the door to seamless design across a wide range of surfaces.
3. It Bonds Chemically, Not Just Mechanically
Unlike many cement-based finishes that rely purely on grip and texture, X-Bond forms a strong molecular bond with the substrate using innovative cross-linking technology. This means better adhesion, longer-lasting results, and reduced risk of delamination over time (that’s a SEMCO guarantee).
4. It’s a Green Material
X-Bond plays a role in sustainability-led design. With ultra-low VOC emissions and the ability to go over existing surfaces, it reduces waste and contributes to environmentally conscious builds, making it a smart choice for eco-minded clients.
5. No Two Finishes Are Ever Exactly the Same
Because X-Bond is trowel-applied by hand, every installation is unique. Although the result will look the same as the samples of the texture finish you chose, the subtleties of the layering, movement, and texture are all one-of-a-kind. Since the applicator’s technique affect the result, it’s important to engage a skilled installer.
6. It’s Thinner Than You Think
You might not know it by looking at it or feeling it, but X-Bond is applied in layers as thin as 1/8”. This makes it ideal for renovations where you want to avoid adding weight or height to existing structures. But despite its light and minimal profile, it’s still incredibly strong.
7. It Can Be Used in Wet Areas
Clients are often surprised when we tell them that X-Bond can be used in wet areas. Yes, our microcement can be applied inside showers, pools, and any other area exposed to (or submerged in) water. When X-Bond is applied in these areas — such as bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor spaces — it’s installed with our advanced waterproofing membrane. It’s also sealed with our SEMCO sealers. When this complete system is applied correctly, it provides a seamless and grout-free alternative to tiles that resists staining, mold, and water damage.
8. It’s More Durable Than Traditional Renders
Compared to conventional cement renders or plaster finishes, X-Bond has greater flexibility and compressive strength. This means it's less prone to cracking and can better handle the natural movement of buildings over time, but that this doesn’t compromise its durability.
9. You Don’t Have to Stick to Grey
While the classic concrete gray is timeless, X-Bond is available in a wide range of standard colors, including plenty of soft whites and warm neutrals. Better yet, we can create custom shades for jobs over a certain size, creating surfaces that blend in seamlessly or stand out as bold design statements. X-Bond gives you the flexibility to explore endless visual effects.
10. It’s a System, Not Just a Product
When you choose X-Bond, you're not just getting a microcement. You're working with a complete system, one that includes specific cleaners, waterproofing products, sealing options, and above all; trained installers. Every layer plays a part in the performance and longevity of the finish.
